Hloedver Hakonarson is a DPhil candidate in Sociology at Nuffield College, University of Oxford, and a member of the International Max Planck Research School for Population, Health and Data Science. His research looks at migration and work, using quantitative and quasi-experimental methods to observe how immigration rules shape migrants' economic trajectories.
His thesis asks how immigration rules shape migrants’ working lives. Many migrants can only live in a country as long as they keep a particular job, which can leave them heavily dependent on their employer. Using novel administrative data from Iceland, he studies what this dependence means for migrants’ pay, careers and decisions to stay or leave.
Research Interests: Migration, integration, quasi-experimental methods.
Previous Education: He holds a BA in Philosophy from the University of Iceland and a Master’s in European Affairs from Sciences Po.
