José Manuel Aburto receives 2021 European Demographer Award

The Förderfonds Wissenschaft in Berlin and Population Europe have announced that José Manuel Aburto, Newton Fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science and the Department of Sociology, is one of two recipients to be honoured with a European Demographer Award 2021, alongside Carlo Giovanni Camarda, Institut National d'Études Démographiques, Paris.

The renowned European Demographer Award supports outstanding research on the causes and consequences of demographic change in Europe. The prizes are awarded to researchers who have just completed their doctorate or who are at an advanced stage of their academic career. The selection is made by a committee of international population scientists.

Melinda Mills, Director LCDS, says: "José Manuel is an exceptionally talented demographer whose work spans exciting new areas in lifespan and mortality research, often focussing on Latin America. We are honoured to have such a talented and award-winning researcher in our midst."

José Manuel Aburto, Newton Fellow at LCDS and the Department of Sociology says: "I am deeply honoured for this recognition of my work. Impactful and meaningful demographic research cannot take place without the help and generosity of others. I am thankful to the European Doctoral School of Demography and all my mentors for supporting and encouraging me during this journey. In a lot of ways this award is also for them."
